2002/09/21 Population Transfer: Is Israel Considering Expelling Palestinians
To Jordan Under Cover Of Iraq War? "The New York Times is reporting Jordan
is worried that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon will force all of the
Palestinians from the West Bank into Jordan, under the cover of a US war in
Iraq...King Abdullah II and his advisors are asking the Bush administration to
assure this will not happen...King Abdullah said recently he would use troops
to prevent Palestinians from entering. The Jordanian information minister also
recently suggested Jordan would use troops to keep Iraqi refugees fleeing a
war from entering the country...Around half of Jordan's 5 million people are
Palestinians, and as many as 400,000 are Iraqis. An influx of refugees during
an unpopular war could destabilize the monarchy"
|
2002/09/8 How 90 Peruvians Became The Latest "Jewish" Settlers: "The
miracle of the creation of this community of new Jews has to be chalked up
wholly and exclusively to the credit - or debit - of the chief rabbinate of
Israel. At the order of the Ashkenazi chief rabbi, Israel Meir Lau, a
delegation of rabbis travelled to Peru. During their two weeks in the country,
they converted 90 people to Judaism, most of them of Indian origin...Upon
arrival in Israel, the 90 new immigrants were taken straight from the airport
to settlements in the West Bank" |
|
2002/08/16 Israel Approves Forced Expulsions Of Families Of 'Suspected
Terrorists': "The expulsions are the first of their kind. Israel says it
decided to use this tactic as a deterrent measure. Last month, the Israeli
military attempted to expel 19 relatives, apparently intending to send them
all to Gaza. But the Israeli Attorney General ruled that only relatives who
are directly connected to attacks on Israel can be punished. Human Rights
activists fear these expulsions are only a precursor to exile from the
Occupied Territories entirely"

2002/07/27 What Do Ariel Sharon, George Bush, Boeing, Bell Helicopter, And
McDonald Douglas Have In Common? Stanley Cohen. He's Suing Them All On Behalf
Of Palestinian Americans For Racketeering And War Crimes: "Israel is
facing searing international criticism after an Israeli F-16 dropped a
one-ton, laser-guided bomb on a densely populated neighborhood in Gaza City.
The bombing killed a Hamas leader as well as nine children and five other
civilians...Whitehouse spokesman Ari Fleischer said President Bush "believes
the heavy-handed action does not contribute to peace." But he also said
President Bush has been and will continue to be the first to defend Israel,
and he didn't mention that the F-16 used in the attack was American-made...But
some people in this country are trying to hold the White House and US arms
manufacturers accountable...New York attorney Stanley Cohen recently filed a
lawsuit against Israel and Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, President George Bush,
Secretary of State Colin Powell, several US arms manufacturers and a number of
U.S. based churches and synagogues that have supported settlements in the West
Bank...The suit charges the defendants with a series of individual acts and
conspiracies-- some dating as far back as 1982 and the massacre at Sabra and
Shatila in Lebanon. It will seek damages and injunctive relief for genocide,
crimes against humanity, war crimes and racketeering. The plaintiffs will
include Palestinian Americans who have been killed, injured, and tortured; who
have been denied medical treatment; whose businesses and homes have been
destroyed and whose homes and lands have been taken to establish illegal
settlements in Palestine"

|
2002/07/20 Seth Ackerman on Camp David Myths: "Complaints about their
coverage of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict has led some outlets to suggest
that it's really all just a matter of perception. But there are some facts
about the history of the conflict that are worth attending to, and one of them
has to do with Camp David, and the idea that current problems stem from
Arafat's rejection of Israel's generous offer there. We'll get behind the
media presentation of that story with analyst Seth Ackerman, contributing
writer to FAIR's magazine, Extra!"

2002/06/30 BRZEZINSKI: A deadly 48 hours in the Middle East has forced
George Bush to shelve his long-awaited peace initiative. Zbigniew Brzezinski
is a former national security advisor to President Jimmy Carter, and one of
the experts currently advising President Bush on Israel. He is in Washington

2002/06/23 Israeli Forces Bomb Gaza City And Invade West Bank Cities After
Latest Suicide Bombing Kills Seven; "Israel announced on Wednesday it will
seize new Palestinian land in response to every future terror attack, and hold
it as long as violence continues. There was no objection from Washington,
which only a few weeks ago demanded that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon withdraw
his soldiers from parts of the West Bank controlled by the Palestinian
Authority" | |

2002/05/27 British Journalist Robert Fisk On The Politics Of Language And The
Media In The Middle East: "a speech British journalist Robert Fisk gave a
few weeks ago at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. In it,
Fisk turns a microscope on the US media's bias, revealing specific and
systematic ways in which the media blocks the Palestinian experience from the
eyes and the ears of the American people"
|
2002/04/26 What Really Happened In Jenin? The Independent Newspaper Of Britain
Has Published The First Comprehensive Investigation: "The Israeli army
insists that its devastating invasion of the refugee camp in Jenin earlier
this month was intended to root out the infrastructure of the Palestinian
militias, particularly the authors of an increasingly vicious series of
suicide attacks on Israelis. It now says the dead were mostly fighters. And,
as always - although its daily behaviour in the occupied territories
contradicts this claim - it insists that it did everything possible to protect
civilians...But The Independent has unearthed a different story. We have found
that, while the Israeli operation clearly dealt a devastating blow to the
militant organisations - in the short term, at least - nearly half of the
Palestinian dead who have been identified so far were civilians, including
women, children and the elderly"
|
2002/04/25 Jewish
American Peace Group Bucking the Tide of Uncritical Support for Israeli
Invasion of West Bank: "Not all American Jews, however, support Israel's
refusal to relinquish their 35-year control over the occupied Palestinian
territories nor Prime Minister Sharon's brutal assault of West Bank cities and
refugee camps. Rabbi Michael Learner, editor of Tikkun magazine, has for many
years been working for peace and justice in the Middle East. He recently
co-founded a new organization called the Tikkun Community, with co-chair
Harvard professor Cornel West, which will serve as a progressive alternative
to conservative Jewish lobby groups that generally back Israel's aggressive
policies. To press their demand that the Bush administration lead a
U.N.-sponsored multinational force to stop the killing, Rabbi Lerner, West and
18 supporters chose to be arrested in an act of civil disobedience at the
State Department April 11th"
|
2002/04/25 Watch
Group Says U.S. Media Bias Favoring Israel Ignores Root Causes of Middle East
Violence: "Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Peter Hart of the
media watch group Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting or FAIR, who examines the
corporate media's coverage of the violent struggle between Israelis and
Palestinians, and the symbolic use of language in network newscasts"
|
2002/04/24 Ariel Sharon Plans To Annex Half Of The West Bank: A Debate On The
History Of The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict And Zionism (Featuring Norman
Finkelstein): "Today on Democracy Now! we will have a discussion on the
history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, looking at the expanding Israeli
settlements on Palestinian lands, but also going back earlier, to the 1948 war
and the roots of the Zionist movement."

Canada to Israel: Get Out of Occupied Territories; "How can Canada help

Commentary he says Canada can help by living up to the position it supports on
paper" | |
|
2002/04/17 Is Criticizing Israel Anti-Semitic? A Debate: "we are going to

policy. Is it anti-Semitic to question the state? We'll have a debate"
|
2002/04/15 Israel's Plan for the Palestinians: Drive the Palestinians out?;
"FSTV interviews Phyllis Bennis of the Institute for Policy Studies and
syndicated columnist Normon Solomon on April 10th as Israeli troops continue
their savage destruction of the Palestinian political and physical
infrastructure in the West Bank"
|
2002/04/15 Hussein Ibish: ADL's spying activities; "Hussein Ibish,
Communications Director for the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee
(ADC). From the SF Examiner; "(The ADC is) an organization that is, in many
ways, the Arab counterpart to the ADL. Though certainly at odds with many
Israeli policies, the ADC is not anti-Semitic, and plays a rather moderate
role." Ibish will talk about the ADL's spying activities as related in the SF
Examiner Article: Adversaries go inside ADL's spying operation "Was the ADL
spying on people?" asked Ibish, quickly answering his own question. "Certainly
in San Francisco they were. We know they were engaging in illegal activities
to gain information. They, and their operatives, were working hand-in-glove
with South African intelligence and Israeli intelligence."" |

2002/04/8 Under Siege: A Report from Inside and Outside the Church of the

human rights lawyer and friend of the shot reporter as he waits outside the

2002/04/3 John Sugg on Israeli Spies: "There are reports that 120 Israelis
were either detained or deported in the wake of September 11 attacks. Some
journalists think there's a story here - that some of the Israelis were
involved in a spy ring right here in the United States. It's even been
suggested that some of them could have been tailing some of the Sept 11
terrorists. So why are the media mostly staying away from this story?
CounterSpin will talk to one journalist who's not: John Sugg, senior editor at
Creative Loafing Newspapers."
|
2002/04/1 Israel Launches All-Out Drive To Isolate "Enemy" Arafat: "The
invasion came shortly after the Arab world unanimously offered Israel peace
and recognition for the first time. The offer came at the Arab summit in
Beirut, and specified that Israel would withdraw from all the Arab lands it
occupied in the 1967 war and recognize a Palestinian state with its capital in
east Jerusalem. In response to the historic declaration, Arafat announced he
was prepared for an immediate cease-fire"
|
2002/02/7 A New Opposition in Israel: "Israeli army officers, in small but
significant numbers, are signing a petition and taking a stand. They say the
occupation of Palestinian land corrupts Israeli society. They say it has
nothing to do with security, that it simply perpetuates humiliation and
harassment of the Palestinian people. They say they will not cross the line
and serve in the occupied territories. Just under 200 reservists are signed on
so far, but it's attracting the attention of Israel's military and political
leaders who say refusal to serve is sedition. Prime Minister Ariel Sharon says
a disobedient soldier threatens Israel's democracy, but his tough response is
generating debate in a nation where soldiers are required to refuse orders
they feel are criminal"
|
2002/01/3 Edward Said Ushers In The New Year With Democracy Now!: "Edward
Said, professor of comparative literature, Columbia University and author of
numerous books, articles, and essays. He has been an eloquent voice for
justice throughout the Palestinian struggle"
|
2001/12/27 Edward Said Discusses The Cycle Of Violence: "Well, just a few
moments ago, we heard Pakistani peace activist, Zia Mian, speak of war as a
kind of "midwife of history," bringing latent conflicts to life. If this is
the case, then how are we to view the United States' expanding "war on
terrorism"? What children will it deliver? And what child has it already
bore?...Scholar and author Edward Said addressed this question recently in a
speech he gave at a conference on the escalation of the Middle East Conflict.
The speech begins broadly with a discussion of the US "war on terrorism" and
then moves more specifically into the case of Israel and Palestine"
|
2001/12/20 "The Dominion Of Death": An Israeli Mother Who Lost Her 13-Year Old
Daughter In A Suicide Bombing Speaks Out Against Israel: "Israeli
propaganda and indoctrination manage to keep coverage of these attacks
detached from any Israeli reality. The story in the Israeli (and American)
media is one of Arab murderers and Israeli victims"
|
2001/12/19 Negotiating Under Fire: ""Track two" they tell us. Track two is
the way to peace in the Middle East. In the diplomatic language of
international peace negotiations, track one is when Prime Ministers and
Presidents stroll the grounds of Camp David, while senior government officials
work out details behind the scenes. When that fails, track two opens up in a
much less precise way. That's when a friend of someone's cousin's has another
friend, and they have an idea or a suggestion or specifically a way out of an
impasse, when the two sides have become so intractably caught in the rhetoric
of hate and intolerance and anger that progress seems impossible"
