Subject: your article "Does Tony...."

Date: Fri, 31 Jan 2003 21:10:25 IST

Having spent nearly a month recently in Baghdad as a member of the Iraq Peace team, reading your articles was always of great support - a drop of sanity in a sea of distortion and obfuscation.

Two small comments which I hope you will appreciate.

1. I sent a copy of your article "Does Tony have any idea what the flies...." to a good friend, who works in central government in New Zealand. It was sent as an email and got blocked by the Government 'Postmaster'. Reason: Unacceptable Language. I have written a letter to the Wellington Newspaper, the DominionPost, congratulating the NZ Government on its recognising that war and language needed to describe it, is obscene.

2. A quote from the Times today (31st January). In an article "Blair, bane of the euroweenies and American superhero", David Brooks writes of the wonderful leadership of Blair and the way he excels "at the cut and thrust of argument" (sic - I think it should be 'sick'). He goes on: "Now we live in the age of Austin Powers, Harry Potter and Tony Blair and suddenly the place seems courageous again."

That says it all.

Good wishes and keep up the good work!

Mr Fisk is a superb jounalist. If only there were more like him. I sense he tells

Heard you on Amy Goodman.

I think you are missing the point when you say this war is about oil, and that we are not attacking North Korea because they're not about oil. That's pretty facile.

What you should be saying is that it is about oil and Israel, and we are not attacking Korea because it's not near Israel.

To Mr. Fisk or whom it may concern:

You have reported on the hidden casualties and atrocities that the public

has been forbidden to see.

My Name is Todd Southern I am a veteran of the USAF 87-91. At the risk of

sounding pompous and arrogant I will tell you that am an idealistic

documentary student at the University of Florida. I have been following the

events in the Gulf since previous war in the Middle East.

I chose documentary in an effort to lend a voice to the voiceless. The

victims that will go unseen as result of the impending war disturbs me

greatly. The simple fact that most Americans are not aware horrific cost of

US sanctions on the Iraqi people is not only painful--it is also evidence of

the eroding freedom Americans take for granted.

I have read that during WWI film crews covering the war were just as viable

a target as the "enemy" of either side. That mentality does not appear to

have evolved. The media shutout by the current US administration likely

will only grow more secretive. It is my fear that so too will military

presence in Iraq.

How can I help? I can operate a camera, edit, produce, run sound, you name

it having learned many phases of production. Graduation is soon, but I feel

that war is far more immediate, and certainly more important. A most humble

offering of services as it were, not to sound so bold, but to fight a war of

silence and secrecy that is being waged against the freedom of press in the

Middle East.

I have no delusions that such work will bring me fame and fortune, heck I

chose documentary over film school, it is simply a matter of freedom.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Respectfully,

You have my whole hearted support in your search for justice. The Americans support the IRA( All groups) Most I would think come from NY via NorAid. Millions of dollars. 3000 dead and more than 20,000 seriously injured over 30 years. My son is 13 and he came to me one day and said "Dad, I like the Americans but I think there leader G Bush and the congress are all bad." For me that was a profound staement from a young man. Blair gets in to power and lets all the IRA convicted murderers go. I'm British and proud of it and he doesn't have my support at all. Sadam is a bad man so is Bush. My regt fought in Borneo and operated across the border (1963) there they found US special forces training up Indonesians. These same US special forces were met at Fort Brag when the SAS visited the home of US Special Forces.

Thanks for putting together this site. It's been indispensable while the

Independent website is (apparently) having problems.

Suggestion: Don't precede every reference to the author with "Mr." It

reads a little strangely. "Robert Fisk" will do. Or "Mr. Fisk" on second

reference.

Also, the text at the top of the page ("This Website is mainly dedicated

to articles by Mr. Robert Fisk...") is partly covered by the top of the

window. (I'm using the Mozilla browser, which is the basis for Netscape

7 and some AOL browsers as well. If you haven't done so, you may

download it at www.mozilla.com )

One last comment: The text in ALL CAPS would do better in Title Case, I

think. ALL CAPS is more difficult to read, and people already have more

difficulty reading text on a screen.

Once again, thanks for your efforts. I'm recommending the site to others.

It would be great if you could make it. Could you kindly let me know at your

Subject: Afghanistan - New documentary

Date: Wed, 15 Jan 2003 16:56:58 IST

Dear Mr Fisk,

I am writing to invite you to a preview of a 80' documentary special that I

have just completed about the last 25 years in Afghanistan and the life and

death of Abdul Haq. It will be held at BAFTA on Thursday 23rd at 11 am in

the RunRun Shaw preview theatre. With your distinguished history of

campaigning journalism, I thought that this might be a film that would

strike a chord.

Afghanistan and the war against terror may have slipped from the headlines,

but as the world braces itself for war in Iraq, its lessons are highly

relevant. This film tells the story of one man¹s war in Afghanistan over 25

years.

It¹s a story of bravery and betrayal and reveals that the CIA were offered

the chance to rid Afghanistan of its terrorist bases and to trap Al Qaida

before and after the events of September 11th and how the CIA turned him

down. It was a refusal that was to have tragic consequences for all

concerned.

From his beginnings as a Mujahideen commander fighting against the Soviet

Union, Haq met Presidents and Prime Ministers and was feted as an Afghan

freedom fighter all over the world during the 1980¹s. After the war against

the Soviet Union, he was the architect of trying to build a multi-ethnic,

all party coalition. He was one of the few Afghan leaders who refused to

take part in the civil war and who did not have blood on his hands. In

short, Abdul Haq was an honest man who passionately wanted to build an

independent and free Afghanistan. He may not have commanded the biggest army

or had the most resources, but he commanded widespread respect from all

ethnic groups and political parties.

The film also demonstrates how Pakistan deliberately undermined Haq's

efforts and poisoned the CIA's view of his activities and other moderates in

favour of the extremists.

After 1998 Haq was at the forefront of leading an all-party coalition

against the Taliban and Al Qaida. It reveals how former senior members of US

administrations continually tried to get Washington to get involved to no

avail. It was Haq who worked behind the scenes to get the former King

involved as a figurehead for unity and it was Haq who went to see Massoud to

persuade him successfully to unite under the King. When the Taliban were

being attacked in September/October 2001, it was Haq¹s name that was at the

top of most peoples lists as being at the forefront of events and one of the

³good guys². But as the film reveals, he received no support whatsoever from

either the CIA or MI6. Instead, they preferred to back warlords for hire

with no commitment to peace or to a long term plan for Afghanistan. This

ultimately led to his death as he went into Afghanistan to rally support.

Our interviewees, including those who did not appear in the final programme,

were from the US State Department, CIA, NSA, British Special Forces,

Pakistan ISI, the UN Mission to Afghanistan, former Mujahideen commanders,

Afghan specialists, friends and family members. A number of interviewees

spoke to us candidly off the record if they were unable to talk openly.

We also extensively researched a British dimension to Haq¹s story, which has

now been omitted from the film. This involves meetings in London after 9/11

and in MI6 visiting Haq in Peshawar. A number of intermediaries were

involved who tried to interest MI6 in backing Haq after September 11th. MI6

declined to assist.

I hope that you might be able to make it - or I can send you a VHS

cassette.

The film will transmit on 10 February at 9pm on BBC 4.

Dear Mr. Fisk.

The Faculty of Arts in collaboration with the Centre for Constitutional

Studies at the University of Alberta are preparing to launch a

Distinguished Lecture on Constitutional Law and Political Ethics. Although

we had anticipated an inaugural lecture for next fall, we believe that the

current situation with Iraq and the Middle East demands that informed and

critical voices be heard among concerned publics and in the Canadian media.

We would thus like to invite you to present the inaugural lecture if

possible before April of 2003. I fully realize that your agenda was

probably booked a year ago. We are hoping, however, that you might have a

small window of opportunity to visit the University of Alberta. It is the

third largest university in Canada and the largest west of Toronto. Your work

is widely appreciated and I can assure you that your presentation would

attract widespread regional , if not national attention. There is a large

peace coalition in Edmonton that would be especially eager to attend your

presentation.

I will await your reply as to interest and availability. As well, we would

appreciate some indication of your fees. I sincerely thank you for your

After swimming in a sea of biased news reporting concerning the Middle East

situation, I find great satisfaction in reading your articles. It is obvious

that the American news media (CNN, ABC, CBC etc.) is being kept under the

thumb by the U.S. government and that reporting the "true facts" has become

unpatriotic. It has almost become a sin even to question the government's

actions. I am now beginning to understand why the American people don't seem

to understand the "why" of the situation and why they seem to have total

confidence in their government's decisions. The technique of "manipulation"

has greatly evolved and has certainly become a very effective tool.

Please keep on doing what you do !!!

Thank you

Maurice .....

PS: Regarding the John Malcovitch thing. I find his comments completely

irrelevant !

All that sun and wine in the south of France must surely have a

softening effect on the

brain.

Subject: The Book

Date: Thu, 09 Jan 2003 17:45:49 IST

Dear sir,

some time ago I have read the article

written by Mr. Robert Fisk where he

mentioned the new book by Ahmed Zeidan

"Bin Laden - Unmasked".

Unfortunately, the book is not available

in any of book stores in my region

(Slovenia, south-east Europe). The biggest

Internet book store (amazon.com) also does

not offer the book (yet).

Could you please advise me, where could I

order the book from?

The only thing I know is that the book is

published by Ahmed Zeidan for Ward Publishing

House, Beirut.

Thank you for your help and

have a nice day,

Miroslav Vulovic

Greetings -

I've sent several letters to The Independent regarding

U.S. aggression toward Iraq - one in 1998 and two or

three last year - but have no way to know if any were

published. The Independent's website doesn't seem to

have a link to letters, either current or archived.

Would you happen to know if/when anything I submitted

may have been published?

Dear Mr. Fisk,

Hello. I am a Lebanese doing my Ph.D. in Immunology in Australia. I have

been reading your remarkable articles on the Middle East for years. I want

to congratulate you on your courageous, daring, critical and outstanding

reflections on the dubious American politics and the unfortunate realities

of the Middle East, that has been suffuring not only since the onset date

of the Isreali- Palestinian conflict, but even way back in history. Your

writings have enlightened me to many facts I have not even been aware of. I

highly admire your fight for the freedom of press, and appreciate your sense

of morality. You carry on your shoulder an extremely difficult task, and no

doubt you are doing a great job. I hope that the obscene emails you get do

not get too daunting.

Regards

Diah

Great site, I didn't know it existed.

I've tried to make a list off all of Robert Fisk's articles on The

Independent's website, by using a perl script (if you want it, I'd gladly

send it to you). You can find the results here:

http://bert.cielen.be/fisk/

As you see, my list goes back all the way to July 1997. I've filtered out

the articles that weren't written by him (as you probably have noticed The

Independent's website search engine also lists articles that include links

to aricles he wrote), though I have included some recent ones that only

mention him.

I have admired Mr Fisks views and have wondered why he has shunned UK TV to air his views. It would be good to see him appear on Question Time especially if Melanie Phillipps is also invited as guest.

Dear Mr Fisk

I have a number of times sent emails to you through the Independent but was never sure whether you ever received them as they were never acknowledged.

I thanked you for your bravery and your integrity as a human being and as a journalist, especially in your support for Palestinians.

If i may take the liberty, i would like to introduce a new book to you on this following link:

http://palestinechronicle.com/article.php?story=2002123005580064

http://snarf.buyitsellit.com/StoreFront/viewProduct.jsp?store=1585&id=5836

I hope you find it worthy of a read and possibly recommend it to others. Mr Baroud is hoping to go to France and also to come to London to promote it. He has received favourable interest it seems far more in Europe than he has, surprise surprise, in the States where he eventually got it published!

Thank you for keeping to your values and principles- you are indeed a rare breed, along with another favourite of mine, John Pilger!!

I would like to say shook run and may God keep you safe. Happy New Year to you.

regards

M...... Rice

ps I have enclosed an article that I wrote for Palestine Chronicle which I hope you enjoy reading. I am not in any way a professional writer or journalist, just the amateurish attempt by a housewife who worries about the way of the world and in particular what happens to my Palestinian people. Jenin , Palestine was and is my homeland. I would appreciate a reply if you have the time as I have been experiencing problems with some of my emails not being delivered to certain recipients.
